چکیده

We predict by first-principles calculations that thin films of a Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 magnetic topological insulator have gapless nonchiral edge states coexisting with the chiral edge state. Such gapless nonchiral states are not immune to backscattering, which would explain dissipative transport in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state observed in this system experimentally. Here, we study the edge transport with both chiral and nonchiral states by the Landauer-Büttiker formalism and find that the longitudinal resistance is nonzero, whereas Hall resistance is quantized to h/e2. In particular, the longitudinal resistance can be greatly reduced by adding an extra floating probe even if it is not used, while the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. We propose several transport experiments to detect the dissipative nonchiral edge channels. These results will facilitate the realization of pure dissipationless transport of QAH states in magnetic topological insulators.

Anomalous Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators due to the Stark effect

It is shown that the presence of matrix dipole moments induced by external electric fields can modify the Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators. In the case of the quantum anomalous Hall effect the induced transverse currents acquire an extra term, being proportional to the Hall conductance and the time derivative of the applied electric field. In the case of the quantum spin ...

Single phase polycrystalline Gd1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-δ samples with x=0.05 , 0.10, and 0.15 have been prepared by standard solid state reaction technique and characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. The electrical resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements have been on the samples. The electrical resistivity measurements indicate a reduction of transition temperature (Tc) and an incre...

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in single-layer and bilayer graphene

The quantum anomalous Hall effect can occur in singleand few-layer graphene systems that have both exchange fields and spin-orbit coupling. In this paper, we present a study of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in single-layer and gated bilayer graphene systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We compute Berry curvatures at each valley point and find that for single-layer graphene the Hall cond...

Giant anisotropic magnetoresistance in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator

When a three-dimensional ferromagnetic topological insulator thin film is magnetized out-of-plane, conduction ideally occurs through dissipationless, one-dimensional (1D) chiral states that are characterized by a quantized, zero-field Hall conductance. The recent realization of this phenomenon, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, provides a conceptually new platform for studies of 1D transport, ...

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in 2D organic topological insulators.

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is a fundamental transport phenomenon in the field of condensed-matter physics. Without an external magnetic field, spontaneous magnetization combined with spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a quantized Hall conductivity. So far, a number of theoretical proposals have been made to realize the QAHE, but all based on inorganic materials. Here, using first-p...
